Aunty Bee Bertha Fozard
BERTHA FOZARD 1905 1995

Citizen May 29-1959
Miss Bertha Fozard
says it in verse!
Many tributes were paid to
the Retiring Lady Mayoress
Bertha Fozard
on Monday. She herself had something
to say, but it was in Verse.
Here it is:
Thanks for the Memory
Of Dinners, Dances Gowns,
A flying trip to Rotterdam
And various other Towns,
The inland Port of Knostrop,
Pennants fluttering in the breeze,
Buckingham Palace Gardens
and Childrens Day in Leeds
Oh, thank you so much.
Thanks for the Memory
Of newborn babies cries,
And the courage shining out at us
From hospital patients eyes,
Fire in the diamonds on a Royal Ladys Hair
And the dignity with which
Mary graced the Festival affair,
Thank you so much.
We say goodbye with a light heart,
knowing we tried to do our part
Without undue fuss
Hooray for us!
But strictly entre ous
We had a good time too,
And from experience Ill tell you
Dreams do sometimes come true.
Ithas been awfully nice to meet you
Cheerio ! and Goodbye to you
And thank you so much.

After 21 years of devoted and exceptional services
to the Citizen, " the Labour Party
Newspaper
Bertha Fozard, has Retired.
Although for some Months she has been working in the Office only part time
it will be difficult to become accustomed to the complete break, officially, for she is unlikely
to forgo the opportunities to meet old friends
& colleagues at No.9.Queens Sq.Leeds
For 21 years Bertha's name has meant both The "Citizen" and the Labour Party,
not only because of Her employment, but also because of the immense Voluntary Services
She has given to the party, and particularly to the Women's side of its activities.
As a favourite poet of hers would have said,
it has been "Bertha this, and Bertha that, and Bertha all the time
The "Citizen" the City Party its, Executive, Committee, her,Constituency and Ward. meetings,
the Women's Advisory Council. The numerous social functions, bazaars and entertainments
Even when she was Lady Mayoress of Leeds in 1958?1959 she made time for party activities.
Always it has been? "see Bertha", Ask "Bertha will see to it", and Bertha has never failed us,
battling along, though often exasperated by well meaning, though exasperating, Good Party Members.
She has never refused her valuable, aid and advice, and her cheerfulness, and friendliness to all who come to the Party and
'Citizen" Offices are proverbial.

the Editor has good reason for gratitude to a loyal and devoted colleague and friend who has made many a rough, path smooth for Him.
Given him a telling off" when he has been rather more cantankerous and obstinate than usual,
and has been always most kind tolerant, and helpful
Regarding the retirement of Bertha Fozard. When 1 came to Leeds 1 found that Bertha was one of the best comrades that 1 have ever worked with
in the Party. In the last Four years 1 have had The opportunity to see the very Real contribution
that she has made to the movement in this city.
We have worked together well and 1 am sorry that she is leaving
One day some. one will do a scholarly work on the contribution made to the Welfare, services of our Country by what iscommonly known
as Maiden Aunts
